In My Classroom

As a teacher of the young elementary grades I think that a class blog will be a great way to introduce the children to technology. While the class can write the blog together, it will also provide excellent ways for the parents to stay up to date in class room activities. An online blog can provide assignment guidelines, helpful hints, links for parents, assignments missed for those absent, newsletters and calendars. Also asking that the students and parents reply to the blog, and topics at least once a month could insure their interaction with the classroom technology.

Wonderful Teaching Tools

I have experienced an amazing tool for teaching with technology in a multidimensional level. This semester I was introduced to the WebQuest. A WebQuest is a self contained online lesson. I had the opportunity to create one of my own and it was a truly rewarding experience. I began by using a Google document template. This is basically a blank slate which outlined the necessary components of the WebQuest. It is astonishing to see how much I contributed to the lesson.
You choose a topic and attach links and resources for the students to explore and build an interacting experience. My WebQuest was not only fun to create, but seeing the finished product was such a feeling of accomplishment. I could not help but thinking," I created this, and children will learn from it!" I guess these are also some of my motivations for teaching.
I would highly recommend WebQuests for classroom activities. I would like to forewarn you though; when cutting and pasting from one format to another the results often require a good deal of tweaking. Depending on your desired final format, I would allow plenty of time to reconstruct the appearance of your quest. When published through Google there are many resources available to help in your creative processes. There are several tutorials and help forums.
For more information you can access the WebQuest home page at http://webquest.org/.
Hello, I am Meghann. I am 25 years old and I hope to get my masters in education. I would love to teach Elementary Education, specifically K-3rd grades. I think that technology will serve a very important role in my classroom. Videos and music are important tools for young children to achieve learning on different levels. There are many styles of learning, and by allowing children to experience multidimensional lessons and multimedia they will experience so much. Children are becoming skilled with technology younger today then ever before, and it will be my job as their teacher to prepare them early on. I plan to introduce my children to computer time, as their future career as students will depend on it. Also I think that a class blog and website may be beneficial for communication with teachers and parents. I am very excited about the possibilities; and to learn as I teach.

Blogs in a Classroom

Thinking of blogs in a 3rd grade classroom doesn't seem very practical. In a older students, maybe even 4th grade, I could see how it could be a great way to inspire learning. If you had a 5th grade class for instance you could make all the students read a story from their language arts curriculum. Then you could give them questions pertaining to each chapter and have them blog to one another about what they thought. This would be a great way to see who is reading without your typical test while also having them learn through peer to peer interaction. This will also prepare them from High School and College where it will become more common.

New Tools

I have learned and used Google Word. I have found it very difficult because I have became so spoiled with Microsoft word. Google Word does not seem very user friendly to me nor does it let me be as creative as I would like with my documents. On the other hand it is great for group projects because everyone can edit without the hassle of emailing back and forth. It probably does more than I have been able to utilize, it is one area I need to work with more.

About Me

My name is Misty and this is my second year at Boise State. I have always been interested in teaching but put my education on hold so I could be home with my children until they were all in school full time. I want to teach in the Elementary school and really like the 3rd grade. I also really enjoy math so I may get an endorsement so I have more opportunity to change. If I do have a 3rd grade classroom I would like to use activities on the computer to make learning more interesting for my students. I could go on YouTube and let them watch videos on space shuttle expeditions, have them read interactive books on the computer or help them prepare for state test with different websites like prepdog.com.

A bit about me...

My name is JoAn and I am currently attending my first semester at Boise State University.  I moved to Boise, Idaho in 2002 from Southern California with my family.  I have always had a passion to teach on some level ever since graduating from high school.  I have been working on my teaching degree in Secondary Education to teach Spanish.

I hope to be able to use technology in my classroom in several ways. Using video to help students understand difficult concepts more quickly, Wikis can be used for group projects, and spreadsheet software can me to  manage things like students' grades and attendance are just some of the ways I can use technology.  I hope to implement a class web page to keep students and parents informed of assignments, projects, events etc. and to invite comments and suggestions.

One new tool that I have learned about is Google Sites to create easy website and pages.  I really like that it is easy to use even if you have no website building experience. It can be frustrating to use at times and doesn't have every feature available that other web building programs may have,  such as spell check, but as a basic, getting started tool to build a website it can be very effective.

I always invite suggestions or comments on the use of technology in the classroom.  I will check back in a couple of days.
